Dana Perri
shows up to win
By: Karen Gould
San
Jose, CA December 21, 2002
Not held in 28 years, this San
Jose indoor event put together by P&D
Promotions was a great success. Taking place in an exhibition hall on a polished
concrete surface with 65 riders and 1,000 fans, racing was at
it’s best. Sponsors for the event included Honda for the Formula
100 race, Therma for the fencing, Rod Lake, Jimmy Odom and countless
others who gave their time, materials and talents.
Dana Perri
and Rod Spencer battled race after race throughout the night for
the first position. They each captured a fast time qualifier, Dana
in the vintage class and Rod in the open class.
They each won the vintage trophy
dash, run twice by agreement and they each won a main event.
The vintage event included 3 heat
races and last chance qualifier with 12 of the 16 riders making
it to the vintage main event while the open class included 5 heat
races 3 semis and the A main. In the end it was 12 of the 32 riders
competing for the A main win. The formula 100 event also had 3 heat races
and a last chance qualifier.
Racing got under way with the vintage
heat races. The crowd was cheering as Rick Hocking and Perri
went into the first turn together but it was Perri first to the
checkers in this one. Rod Spencer and Joe Carrera were first to
turn one in the second heat with Spencer crossing the finish first.
The final vintage heat Johnny Larson was in front on the
first turn but Brad Spencer got under and to the checkers first
in this one.
Mike Besemer and Jimmy Abrams got
the lead in the first 100 heat race with Abrams taking that victory.
Frank Nye was first to the checkers after getting around
Jason Pullen in heat 2 and the final 100 heat race ended with
Dave DeCamp just inches in front of David Morgan.
The vintage trophy dash followed
these heat races and the nights 4 fastest vintage riders were
on the track. It was Rick Hocking and Dana Perri into turn
one but in no time Rod Spencer got by Hocking and the battle between
Perri and Spencer was on. Coming
out of turn three of the last lap they each had to maneuver to
get by a downed rider and Spencer let off the throttle giving
Perri the chance he needed to get past. Agreeing to ride again at the request of the
spectators, Perri and Hocking were again first to the first turn
but Spencer got by them both to win this one.
In the Open dash it was Perri to turn one first again in
front of 6 others but Spencer had a wheel under Perri and never
let off. Spencer tried
getting around on the inside and outside and finally got the advantage
and the win when Perri bobbled coming out of turn three to the
finish.
The open semis were exiciting with
the first 2 riders from each transferring to the A main for a
total of 12 riders from the original 30+.
Following the open semis was the vintage A
main. On the front row
Perri had the inside pole with Brad and Rod Spencer next followed
by Russell Firanzi Jr., Rick Hocking and Joe Carrera on the outside
pole. Hocking took the
lead out of the first turn with Perri on the inside and Franzi
Jr. on the outside. Rod Spencer working his way through traffic
got by Hocking on the inside and went on to finish this 15 lap
race first followed by Brad Spencer and Russell Firanzi Jr
In the 100 A
main, Eric Kiser got the lead from the start,
and, Mike Besemer had a plan of his own.
Coming from a second row start
and having to get by those in front, Mike Besemer was able to
take the second spot across the line in this one.
The day’s final race lined up and
when the light changed Hocking, Perri and
Llebo jumped out to get the drive. This 20 lap main event saw position changes
throughout the race. Hocking
held the lead during the first few laps with Tony Rose and Matt
Proto followed by Perri. Perri got by Proto, Rose and Hocking while Rob
Spencer was working his way through the pack from the rear. In the meantime, Beau Brown and Daniel Fishman
were held up when Danny Casey bobbled and took a turn for the
infield allowing Rod Spencer to get by both of them and into top
contention. With so much confusion on the track Perri did
not realize he had won until after taking the checkers. Rod Spencer and Tony Rose followed Perri to
the podium.
